2012 was a groundbreaking year for archeology in Israel. In July, archeologists excavating an ancient synagogue in Israel’s northern Galilee, uncovered a mosaic floor on which was depicted a biblical figure of Samson (from the book of Judges) with a Hebrew inscription.

The synagogue dates back to the Late Roman period (approximately the 4th-5th centuries C.E.) and is located just west of the small Israeli town of Migdal. The discovery is important because it is one of only a few known synagogues from that time period that depicts such biblical scenes, while the high quality of work also sheds light on the society that created such an intricate mosaic.
